Summary
ToggleI. The Verdon Gorges: A unique geological marvel
The Verdon is not only the largest canyon in Europe; it is a natural sanctuary where the force of water has sculpted the limestone over millions of years. The canyon stretches for nearly 25 kilometers, with cliffs that can reach 700 meters deep.
- Emerald water: The river's characteristic color comes from the fluorine and microalgae it contains. At Lake Sainte-Croix, this hue becomes a milky turquoise blue which contrasts beautifully with the wooded hills.
- The Route des Crêtes (D23): It's the’spectacular route par excellence. Located on the right bank, this loop starting from La Palud-sur-Verdon takes you to the summits. Each viewpoint (Pas de la Bau, Escalès) offers a different perspective. This is where you'll have the best chance of observing the griffon vultures which nest in the cliffs and soar majestically above the void.
- The Sublime Point and the Samson Corridor: Located at the confluence of the Verdon and Bau rivers, the Sublime Point offers a panoramic view of the beginning of the Grand Canyon. From there, one can descend towards the Samson Corridor, the narrowest point of the gorge, marking the start of the famous Blanc-Martel hiking trail.
II. The surroundings: A heritage between lavender and history
The Verdon hinterland is a mosaic of Provençal landscapes and of hilltop villages which deserve further exploration.
1. Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, a jewel of earthenware suspended from the rock
Often cited as one of the most beautiful villages in the world, it is built in an amphitheater shape at the foot of limestone cliffs. You will discover the’earthenware art, introduced in the 17th century. Don't forget to look up to see the’hanging golden star suspended in mid-air by a 227-meter chain.
Discover the village of Moustiers-Sainte-Marie.
2. The Valensole Plateau, an ocean of lavender
To the west of the gorges, this plateau is the kingdom of lavender. In June and July, the horizon turns purple as far as the eye can see. It's the perfect time to visit... artisanal distilleries and of taste the lavender honey, a jewel of local gastronomy.
Discover the Valensole Plateau.
3. Castellane and the Roc, the sentinel of the Verdon
Castellane, the gateway to the gorges from the east, is a dynamic medieval city. Its silhouette is marked by "The Rock", a cliff 184 meters surmounted by the Notre-Dame du Roc chapel. It is also the nerve center for whitewater sports (rafting, hydrospeed).
Discover Le Roc de Castellane and its chapel.
4. The villages of the Haut-Var, breathtaking places
On the other side of the south bank, villages like Aiguines offer famous woodturning workshops, while Bauduen stretches languidly along the shores of the lake.

IV. Minivan and coach hire: Which one to choose?
Logistics in the Verdon can be complex due to the narrowness of some roads and the summer crowds.
- The minivan (8 seats): Absolute flexibility. It allows access to areas inaccessible to large vehicles, such as some small local producers or remote hiking trailheads. It's the "premium" solution for... small groups who wish to be able to stop at any time for an impromptu photo.
- The coach (49 seats and more): Group comfort. Modern coaches are equipped with reclining seats, USB ports and air conditioning, essential under the Provençal sun. The elevated position is a major advantage in the Verdon: where a car sees a safety wall, coach passengers see the bottom of the precipice and golden eagles. It is also the the most environmentally friendly solution, replacing about fifteen individual cars on roads that are often congested.
